ANALOG LINES
An Overview of Analog Lines for
Business Phone and Internet Service
ITelNet will provide any small business with inexpensive phone
and internet service in the form of analog lines. While most
medium to large companies will want more robust products like
T1s to solve their phone and internet needs, very small
businesses, those that need only 1 to 6 phone lines, may choose
analog lines to solve their telecom needs. You can even use DSL
(high speed internet service) on one of the analog lines to
connect to the web, and still use that line for your small
business phone service.

A History of Business Analog Lines
In the literal sense, analog lines are phone wires or cables that carry analog (as opposed to digital) signals. Both residences and businesses can use analog lines (also known as POTS phone lines) to get phone service.
P.O.T.S. lines commonly stands for Plain Old Telephone Service, but originally stood for Post Office Telephone Service, when the Post Office was managing analog phone lines and related products.
Analog lines, unlike digital lines, carry a signal by wave, as opposed to the 1s and 0s of digital phone lines (also known as binary). In simple terms, a person's voice is converted to an electrical signal and that signal is carried along the analog line. However, modern devices, such as fax machines and modems (used to connect analog lines to the internet) are entirely capable of transforming the analog signal into a digital signal. Even
an advanced
expandable phone system (which iTelNet also sells and installs for business of all sizes)
is capable of transforming the analog phone line signal into a digital signal.
In fact, because most digital devices have some analog parts, differentiating between analog lines for small business, and digital lines for small business phone service, is a process that's become nearly obsolete. However, be sure to check with an expert phone technician before you install expensive telephone equipment (see the Interesting Fact below for an explanation of why).

INTERESTING ANALOG LINE FACT
It's fascinating to note that a digital signal can potentially damage analog phone equipment. In short, most modern offices are wired not with analog lines for phone service, but with digital phone lines for their digital phone equipment. If you were to hook up an analog phone to a digital phone line at your business, you could potentially damage the analog phone or analog business phone equipment! So be sure to have a qualified electrician install any phone system or other expensive equipment, whether your business relies on the analog line or the faster digital phone line. |
